Prescription Drug Abuse in America
In the United States, we grow up in a society that tells us that there are medications to fix any problem we have. From mental health to physical injury, as well as many other issues, there are different medications for each one. Many of us have a bias that prescription medications are the only way to deal with certain issues. The reality is that here in the United States, we prescribe 81 percent of the world’s opioid supply each year.
This number shows you how much our country relies on prescription pain medications in comparison to other countries. Now, looking at this situation logically, it’s safe to say that other countries suffer from pain as well. When we acknowledge this, it’s much easier to see that there are other ways to deal with medical issues. Unfortunately, since we believe medications are the only way to be well, addiction develops.
How Prescription Drug Addiction Develops
Medications serve the purpose of healing certain ailments, and we’re naturally drawn toward them for comfort. Nobody likes being in pain or having thoughts or emotions that are troubling, and medications are a quick solution. The problem is that many medications also release dopamine to our brain, so it’s possible to develop a dependence. When dopamine is constantly flowing because of the medications, our brain then needs the medication in order to feel well.
The most commonly abused narcotic medication include:
- Opiates and opioids – Prescribed for pain management
- Benzodiazepines – Prescribed for various anxiety disorders
- Amphetamines – Prescribed for ADD and ADHD
After using these medications regularly for an extended period, the body builds a tolerance along with the dependence. The brain makes the person feel like he or she needs more of the medication to feel well. The brain will actually intensify symptoms of pain or anxiety as a way to have the person take more of the medication. Eventually, the person loses control of his or her use of the medication, and that’s when addiction occurs.

One of the crucial forms of therapy is family therapy because addiction affects the loved ones as well.
