Anxiety Treatment
Anxiety is a group of mental health disorders that cause doubt, fear, nervousness, and worry. They can affect how you act and feel, as well as cause physical symptoms. While mild anxiety is unpleasant, severe anxiety can have a significant impact on your daily life. If your condition is serious, anxiety treatment is necessary to help you function normally.
Anxiety Types
In general, you experience anxiety when you overreact to a situation compared to the norm. When it interferes with your ability to function and sleep, for example, it’s a daily problem.
There are several anxiety disorders that can cause over-the-top reactions, including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Phobias, separation anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorder are other types of anxiety.
Anxiety Causes
A range of factors can lead to anxiety, such as genetics, brain chemistry, and health conditions. For instance, you’re more likely to have anxiety if others in your family do. Abnormal levels of specific neurotransmitters in the brain can increase your likelihood too. Lack of oxygen, stress, and symptoms from a health condition can also predispose you to anxiety.
Furthermore, your living environment and experiences largely contribute to the development of anxiety. Some factors include stress over money, school, relationships, work, and natural disasters. Trauma, such as being the victim of a crime or the sudden death of a loved one, can trigger anxiety as well.
Also, substance abuse and use disorders can change brain chemistry, causing anxiety to develop. The disorder is also a symptom of withdrawal from many types of drugs, including heroin and prescriptions.
Anxiety Treatment Experience
Every person is different, so your experience in anxiety treatment will differ from someone else’s experience. The main factor that steers the treatment is the cause of your problem. In most cases, treatment consists of therapy and medicines. However, other methods are useful when you have co-occurring disorders, such as substance use.
Therapy
Counseling is the standard anxiety treatment and uses various techniques, depending on your needs. It can combine cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other programs, for instance.
CBT helps you identify negative thought patterns that make you feel uneasy. The cognitive part of this technique aims to eliminate distorted thoughts. Moreover, the behavioral part helps you change your reactions to situations or objects that trigger anxiety. For example, a therapist may take an exposure-based approach to help you face your fears.
Anxiety Treatment Medicines
Several medicines can help you with anxiety. In fact, your therapist may prescribe one during treatment to control some of your mental and physical symptoms. However, you might keep taking medicine after your core therapy sessions if you still struggle with anxiety. In this case, you’ll continue counseling as well.
Many therapists prescribe benzodiazepines, such as Valium and Xanax. However, these are very addictive drugs, and seniors who take them have a higher risk for dementia. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are antidepressants that can also treat anxiety. Some examples include Lexapro, Prozac, and Zoloft.
Tricyclics, such as Anafranil and Tofranil, also work well for most anxiety problems. However, they can cause dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness and weight gain. Beta-blockers, buspirone, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are other medicines that can treat anxiety.
