When people struggle with drug addiction or abuse, overdose is a strong possibility. However, if they don’t get help, it’s a question of when rather than if they’ll overdose. It’s important for family members and friends to know which drug overdose symptoms to look for. Therefore, the best chance they have of surviving an overdose is to get medical help right away.

When Does a Drug Overdose Occur?

In fact, an overdose happens when people take too much of a drug. The dose becomes toxic to the body and poisons them. For example, alcohol poisoning is a sign of overdose. After relapsing, they think they can take the same amount of drugs as before treatment. However, they no longer have the same level of tolerance. Therefore, their bodies aren’t ready to process the large amount of drugs, which causes an overdose.

Drug Overdose Symptoms

The symptoms that people have during an overdose differ depending on many factors. For example, different drugs cause different drug overdose symptoms. Some of the most common include:

Vomiting
Confusion
Seizures
Coma
Internal bleeding
Hallucinations
Difficulty breathing

Since some of these are life-threatening problems, it’s important to seek medical help right away. Failure to do so can result in permanent damage to organs in the body or even cause death. Overdose symptoms are typically worse than withdrawal symptoms. Both make people feel terrible, but withdrawal doesn’t typically end in death. In either case, it’s important to seek medical attention.
