  • An inability to control or reduce drug use

  • Engaging in dangerous behaviors while under the influence of drugs
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms, like anxiety, sweating, depression, insomnia, tremors, and increased heart rate
According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 46.3 million people aged 12 or older (or 16.5 percent) had a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year, including 29.5 million who had an alcohol use disorder, 24.0 million who had a drug use disorder, and 7.3 million people who had both an alcohol use disorder and a drug use disorder.

Often, when individuals struggle with substance abuse, they also have a co-occurring mental health disorder like anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An individual can develop a substance use disorder to cope with the symptoms of their mental health disorder, which may only make the symptoms worse. Further, substance abuse may mask the symptoms of any co-occurring disorder, making it difficult to diagnose and properly treat.
