A dual diagnosis is when an individual has a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder like anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Depending on the mental health disorder and addiction, dual diagnosis may take a variety of forms. Substance abuse can mask many symptoms, so it can be challenging to diagnose the underlying mental health disorder until the drug or alcohol addiction is treated. Individuals with dual diagnoses may have trouble maintaining relationships, withdraw socially, isolate, and express emotions. This can intensify their mental illness or substance use disorder symptoms. When someone is actively in their addiction, they may be less likely to receive adequate medical care. They are more likely to experience severe medical complications and early death and are at increased risk of violent acts.

Signs and Symptoms of a Dual Diagnosis

Signs of problematic behaviors that could indicate that someone is struggling with a mental health disorder and substance use disorder or a dual diagnosis include:
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), about 8 million people, or 17.5% of adults living in the U.S. with a mental health disorder, have a co-occurring substance use disorder.
A dual diagnosis recovery can be challenging to deal with because it has two parts that need to be addressed and treated. Specialized residential addiction and mental health treatment are vital because it allows individuals to address their substance use disorder first so they can then get the appropriate treatment for their mental health disorder.

What are Co-Occurring Disorders?

A co-occurring disorder is similar to a dual diagnosis in that it usually refers to two or more health issues occurring simultaneously. However, co-occurring disorders refer to mental health issues that result from or contribute to the development of an addiction.

In some cases, a co-occurring disorder develops as a result of brain changes caused by drug or alcohol use. A mental illness can cause symptoms that interfere with daily life, and some people turn to drugs or alcohol to ease these symptoms.
A person who self-medicates may temporarily feel better, but it can also lead to substance abuse disorders when the person is unable to cope with mental health symptoms effectively.
Although treatment of co-occurring disorders in conjunction with substance abuse issues can be challenging, an integrated treatment approach with a dual diagnosis rehab has proven effective for lasting recovery.

Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Programs

The Silver Pines treatment team has experience in treating individuals with dual diagnosis, enabling clients to get the targeted treatment they need to start on the path towards recovery from the substance use disorder and the co-occurring mental health disorder. We help each client by addressing their substance use disorder first so we can treat the underlying mental health disorder more successfully. Some of the mental health conditions we treat include anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and schizoaffective disorder.

Silver Pines helps each client struggling with a dual diagnosis realize they aren’t alone. We also teach our clients to challenge the shame they have carried, believing something inherently wrong with them. While engaging and interacting with their peers in treatment, each client learns that although they may use different coping mechanisms, the reasons they feel the need to cope are often very similar.

At Silver Pines, we offer the following dual diagnosis treatment programs, which incorporate individualized, holistic, and therapeutic support throughout each level of care.

Clients struggling with a dual diagnosis are welcomed to our home-like treatment centers, where support is available 24/7. We take the stress and complications out of the treatment and recovery process so that our clients can focus solely on getting better and stronger.
