Reality Therapy Program

What is a Reality Therapy Program?
The concept of reality therapy is simple. Reality therapy attempts to help you control the things around you more effectively so that you can satisfy your basic needs without hurting anyone, including yourself.
Why is this therapy effective? It gives you an element of feeling that you are in control of your addiction instead of allowing your addiction to control you. However, there is another element here. Since we know that no one is entirely in control of their addiction, then the therapy helps you to reach a middle ground between controlling what you can and accepting what you cannot control — much like the serenity prayer.
So in effect, you take responsibility for your actions and behaviors and nothing else. That is where the element of ‘control’ comes in.
Focusing on the Present and the Future
Reality therapy helps you stay focused on the present moment and the future. Since you can’t control the past, then stay focused on what you can control now. Thus, it shapes a more positive future for you and those around you.
Your therapist is instrumental in creating a positive environment where you can focus on the present moment while teaching you to control your thoughts and actions. They also help you to develop positive relationships with those around you by creating a plan to reconnect with your friends, family, and coworkers.
There are specific issues that your therapist can help you address:
- Stay focused on the present moments
- Avoid discussing negative matters — that is for different treatment
- Concentrate on what you can do now through positive thinking
- Avoid shifting the blame or complaining
- Do not judge anything
- Do not make excuses — instead, take responsibility and focus on specifics
