Schedule 6 Drugs

Schedule 6 Drugs

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was created in 1973 as a way to help control and monitor drugs. The DEA uses a classification schedule in which to categorize drugs and medications. The classification rating originally went from schedule 1 up to schedule 5. Recently they added schedule 6 drugs.

How the Scheduling Drugs Work

The DEA uses the scheduling of drugs to help users, physicians, and the general public to understand the degree of risk each drug represents. With each level you go up on the schedule, the potential risk for abuse goes down a little bit.

For example, a schedule 1 drug would have the most potential for risk. In addition, a schedule 1 drug has no medical use. Examples of schedule 1 drugs are heroin, LSD, ecstasy, and crack cocaine.

Schedule 2 drugs are still highly addictive but have medicinal use. Examples of schedule 2 drugs include:

  • Oxycodone
  • Vicodin
  • Methadone
  • Methamphetamine
  • Ritalin
As you move up the scale in the schedule, the potential for abuse lessens.

What are Schedule 6 Drugs?

When the DEA originally created the drug schedule, they only had schedules 1 through 5, but more recently added schedule 6. According to the information available, the only schedule 6 drugs on the list right now are marijuana and Tetrahydrocannabinols. Tetrahydrocannabinols is the active chemical in cannabis. It is also one of the oldest hallucinogenic drugs.

Schedule 6 drugs are considered a low risk for physical dependence. However, these drugs may cause psychological addiction. Initially, when the schedule 6 description was written they include verbiage indicating that these drugs have no accepted medical use. Certain states, though, have now designated marijuana for medical use.

Addiction to Schedule 6 Drugs

Schedule 6 drugs, especially marijuana, are more readily available to the public since the laws have changed legalizing marijuana in certain states. That means people may be participating in taking these drugs more often than other drugs. In fact, marijuana is one of the most popular drugs of use in the United States. However, people are still at risk for addiction to marijuana. This creates a need for substance abuse treatment center in Mahanoy City PA.
