Am I an Alcoholic?

Am I an Alcoholic?

Alcohol is one of the most common drugs in the United States. People can walk into nearly any restaurant to order a drink or any store to buy beer or wine. Due to how common this drug is, alcohol abuse is a real problem. If people find themselves drinking too much, it’s important for them to ask, “Am I an alcoholic?”

Alcohol Abuse

Abusing alcohol is a common problem among both teens and young adults. People who drink several alcoholic beverages at one time may have an alcohol abuse problem. Abusing alcohol is dangerous because it can lead to alcohol addiction and dependency.

What happens when people drink too much alcohol too quickly? Their bodies can’t metabolize it quick enough, so they become drunk. Most doctors say that having five or more alcoholic beverages at one time is alcohol abuse for men. The threshold for women is four or more drinks. It’s possible for people to abuse alcohol without developing an addiction. However, just because they don’t develop an addiction doesn’t mean that alcohol abuse isn’t a problem. People who abuse it may have problems at school or work. They can also develop a number of health problems and put their lives at risk.

Am I an Alcoholic?

People have to ask themselves the tough question, “Am I an alcoholic?” To actually answer it, they have to take a step back and truthfully evaluate their lives.

Some signs that they abuse alcohol include:

  • Joking about alcoholism or drinking too much
  • Not keeping up with work, school or home responsibilities
  • Feeling like they need to have a drink at the end of the day to relax
  • Drinking in the morning or when they’re alone
  • Forgetting what they do when they drink
  • Making excuses about drinking

Heavy Drinking and Health Concerns

If people drink heavily, a lot of problems can arise, including pancreatitis, liver disease, and cancer. Drinking heavily can even increase blood pressure.

Long-term drinking can cause other issues as well. For example, people who drink heavily for years can damage their brains and lose their memories. Ongoing drinking can also cause other mental conditions such as depression and anxiety.
